Accountability Isn’t What You Think It Is

“I just need someone to keep me accountable.”

I hear it all the time—usually when someone’s stuck, frustrated, or spinning their wheels. And while it’s an honest request, it points to a common misunderstanding:

Accountability isn’t something I can give you.

It’s something you take.
True accountability is ownership of the decisions you’ve made and will make.

It’s the agreement you make—not just with your coach, but with yourself—about what matters, and what actions you're committed to.

It’s not about being perfect.
It’s about doing what you said you would do—even when it’s hard, inconvenient, or uncomfortable. It doesn’t need to be 100% but it does need to be an action that moves the needle.

As your coach, I can:

  • Help clarify your plan

  • Support you when things get messy

  • Ask questions that push you toward the outcomes

  • Guide you as the plan and circumstances evolve.

As your coach, we cannot:

  • Set your alarm

  • Pack your gym bag

  • Turn off social media or the TV

  • Prep your meals

  • Walk you through the front door of the gym

That part’s on you and thats the ownership.

And here’s the upside—when you take accountability for your actions, you also own the outcome. The progress, the confidence, the momentum—that becomes yours... and when you take ownership you’ll learn that these are not things you need, they’re tools that you develop.

I’ve seen this play out over and over:

  • Jonny put it simply:
“I’m seeing great quality of life changes when I work just as hard outside of Basis as in class and put in practice what the coaches say.”

  • Candis nailed the mindset shift:
“I’ve learned that health is not developed by perfection, but by balance and consistency. That I can’t rely on motivation alone, otherwise I’d be in the ‘deep end’ already.”

  • Jordan shared what happens when you show up for yourself:
“Even if everything in my life doesn’t feel like it’s going well, putting in the time on myself helps immediately, and seemingly the rest of my life kinda follows suit.”

  • Rachel found her groove by taking initiative:
“I’ve been able to gain more confidence and see more results by adding additional classes and working with Kristin through the nutrition program. I feel like I’m finding a maintainable balance and I am so appreciative.”

  • And Ricky captured the shift in attitude:
“I’ll leave Basis with a ‘get it done’ attitude. No task is too tall after crushing a good workout at Basis.”

That’s not luck. That’s not just a good workout.
That’s what happens when someone stops outsourcing their progress—and starts taking ownership for it.
When you decide you must live a certain way.

So here’s the question:
If you keep waiting—what does life, 1 year  from now look like?

If you take ownership & accountability—what could it look like?
