The Beginner's Guide to Better Sleep

I have two kids under three. In my house, sleep is inconsistent…at best. Shoutout to my wife (we’re doing it). Sleep hygiene feels like advice for someone with life different than my own.

So this isn't a lecture about hitting eight hours every night. Many of us can't fully control that right now. What you can control is what happens in the hours you do get.

If I Had to Start Over, Here's Exactly How I'd Build Strength

If you walked into a gym today with little to no experience, you'd probably leave more confused than when you walked in. A hundred different machines, a dozen classes to pick from, maybe a trainer telling you to feel the burn.

It’s all pretty far away from strength training…like, not even close. You may break a sweat and feel that burn, but real strength training does specific things for you: it builds muscle, makes your tissue more resilient, protects your joints, increases bone density, and adds years to your life. Most of what gets marketed as training doesn't touch any of that

The Inner Compass, Part 1: Perceiving the Core

In philosophy, there is often a distinction between “appearance” and “reality.” Because there is such an incredible variety of ideas about the nature of reality, there are actually a myriad of such distinctions. Not all thinkers make any such distinction. Many make it provisionally; they accept some version of it for now, but are open to eventually understanding that there is no difference between appearance and reality.

I provisionally accept a version of this distinction for reasons beyond the scope of this piece.

Inner True North: Training Decisions, Life, and Purpose

We have the happy opportunity to make decisions - to act or not act - in ways that greatly influence our lives. For many people, this may be more true now than ever before in human history.

We also cannot help but make thousands of decisions every day. Some are of great consequence; others, seemingly little. However, even these can have unexpected consequences. Since actual importance can differ from perceived importance, it is wise to acknowledge our uncertainty about the full impact of any given decision.

There is truth in the saying: “How you do anything is how you do everything.” Part of its truth is about decision making. Much or all of our skillful action or inaction begins with this process and it is, at least somewhat, independent of any particular decision. Decision making is a skill unto itself.

What is Nutrition Coaching?

Nutrition coaching at Basis is built around one thing:

You

We know that the one-size-fits-all solution is outdated. and thus our approach isn’t centered on a single method—it’s centered on your goals, your lifestyle, and what success looks like to you.

Some clients come in wanting to lose weight. Others want to gain muscle, or maybe it’s both! For many, it’s about feeling more energized, improving performance, or dialing in an eating plan that supports a life well lived.

Whatever the goal, the foundation is the same: learning how your food fuels your body and impacts how you feel, look, and perform.

Plateau or Blind Spot?

At some point in your training, you’re going to feel like things aren’t working anymore.
You may think and say:

“I was making progress… and now It’s not working.”
“I don’t feel motivated.”
“Nothing’s changing.”

And when that happens, there’s a natural assumption that something’s wrong—with the plan, with your effort, with your body.

But here’s a question worth asking:
Has progress really stopped? Or have you just lost sight of what progress looks like right now?

Accountability Isn’t What You Think It Is

“I just need someone to keep me accountable.”

I hear it all the time—usually when someone’s stuck, frustrated, or spinning their wheels. And while it’s an honest request, it points to a common misunderstanding:

Accountability isn’t something I can give you.

It’s something you take.
True accountability is ownership of the decisions you’ve made and will make.

Strong For a Reason

“I want to be strong.”

It’s the goal I hear more than any other. And for good reason—strength is appealing. A strong, resilient body is something worth building.

But here’s what I’ve come to believe after 14+ years of coaching:

Strength isn’t the goal.
It’s the expression of a life well lived.

Make it Personal

Let me give you a peek behind the curtain on the game being played in the fitness industry. Not-so Personal Training

Here’s an example: a coach builds a general workout, tweaks it slightly for each person, and calls it personal training. And lately, a lot of “small group training” studios are doing the same—put a few people in a session, assign them similar workouts, adjust on the fly. Slap on the label: personal training.

Confidence in Movement

How can I become more confident in/about moving my body?
The answer starts with the motor cortex…and ends with CARs.

To answer this question, let us begin by agreeing on a definition of confidence. I like the 3rd definition offered by Oxford Dictionary for our purposes:

Confidence: a feeling of self-assurance arising from one’s appreciation of one’s own abilities or qualities.

Gratitude

Gratitude is not a passive experience—it’s an active choice. It’s a practice that, when cultivated consistently, has the power to rewrite our perception, improve our health, and enhance our overall well-being. By making gratitude a verb—something we do daily—we create a life that is more full of things like: patience, happiness, fulfillment.

The Truth about Group Training

You deserve more. Your goals & outcomes should not be a matter of IF but of WHEN. To remove the guesswork. Make it inevitable not just a possibility.

For the longest time, we didn’t have a structured system in place to assess and create personalized plans that address individual movement limitations, pain points, and long-term goals.

That’s changing. And it’s exciting.

Pause

It’s easy to get swept up in the current of daily responsibilities, endless to-do lists, and the never-ending demands of life. Mix that in with some poor nutrition, doom-scrolling, and night after night of poor sleep, and BAM— you have a recipe for frustration, stagnation, helplessness, and even resentment.
